Conversion system from 32 to 64 bit

Asked by Bram van Leeuwen

I have a system 32 bit and am considering to place a 64 motherboard with a new cpu.
The system has now a dual boot with W-8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04.
Do I have to do something about the installed Ubuntu version? Or do I have to install a 64-bit version over the exisiting version?
Is this possible without damaging the exisiting programs and data?

The only possibility to switch over from a 32bit to a 64bit version of Ubuntu is a new installation. You will have to re-install the base system and all programs. It should be possible to do an in-place reinstall that leaves all your files intact (using the "something else" dialogue and manual partition allocation without formatting), but in any case creating backup copies before such change is strongly recommended.

But I do not see the need to move over from your running 32bit system to 64bit. A 32bit system runs well also on 64bit-capable hardware, so you should be able to continue with the system as it is.
