install new OS on locked hard drive

background: Received a damaged laptop ( acer aspire 5732z) dropped and smashed screen. Unit still powered up, but only to an unfamilier screen that required password. Was told the hard drive was locked. swopped hard drive to another computer and tried to load new OS to get past locked OS
 - ubuntu14.04, known good disk, 2 failures. Tried ubuntu12.04.2 also known good, and failed. Each failed with error message window:
                 line 1 :error
                 line2 :input/output error during read on /dev/sda
                 line3: retry(highlighted) ignore cancel
clicked retry and just went back to error window
clicked cancel and nothing appeared to happened
clicked ignore and install appeared to continue.
The stage where the error window appeared was at the location/time zone window

observation laptop(HP pavilliondv2000) is running noticeably hotter than usual even when the dvd drive is stopped

Could have damaged the controller on the board when it was dropped.

Hello actionparsnip, thank you for your reply.
It has since been confirmed that the hard drive in locked via firmware, so I will hand it on to a geek friend as this is to advanced for me.
