ubuntu 14.10 and 14.04 freeze on streaming

Asked by robert

hardware HP Pavillion Notebook, AMD A8 - 6410 APU with radeon R5 Graphics

I have a dual boot computer with the windows 8 that came with the above system. I can boot to both systems and they appear to be running normally. Problem comes after about 30 minutes of streaming the ubuntu 14.10 (and now 14.04.2 - I went back a distribution), both freeze and touchscreen, keyboard and mouse are inoperable. only thing i can do is power down and restart. the audio is still running in a 1 second loop - repeating the same word over and over again when this problem occurs.

The freeze effect has also occured with a search of bluetooth devices - that the system does not seem to be able to locate either using its internal bluetooth or a usb bluetooth stick

Legacy support is: disabled
secure boot is: enabled
the ubuntu systems I talk about above are 64 bit

I have three other systems running 14.04 with no problems fore more than six months

Can someone start me on how to go about solving this problem?

Have you tested your RAM using Memtest86 from Grub? It's a good place to start.

I ran the full test of all devices including memory from uefi bios. There where no issues. It also works without issues on win 8. I thought memory so if i will run diagnostics you suggest

Have you tried a different session? If you install the xfce4 package then log off Ubuntu and log i to the XFCE session, is it ok there?

I have run a thourough memory test over 4 hours and it believes it doesnt have a problem.

I have installed xfce4 and am currently streaming with it.

Many thanks I will post the outcome - I guess this will tell me its the laptop if it fails and be ambiguous should it run ok under xfce4 - since it is using less of memory?

Anyhow many thanks its running

The machine has been running two streams now without issues for approximately 4 times longer than it took the ubuntu systems to lock up. It appears to be working under xfce4.

1/. Should I attempt to install another flavour of linux?
2/. Are there logs that perhaps I should look at or enable that might give further clues under ubuntu?
3/. If you have any next steps in order to isolate the ubuntu issues I appear to be having please let me know?

Many Thanks so far

I'd just keep what you have. We have identified the issue as either Cpmpiz or Gnome. I bet it's Compiz.

OK. By keep what you have you mean use xfpe4?

Can you advise there is no point to installing mint - for example - I have read compiz is giving problems in 14.04 ?

There is no point to try to change compiz or gnome setting under Ubuntu in an attempt to resolve the issues I have?

Anybody who might stumble across this post - there are a lot of people with the same issues from the posts I have read.

I updated to the latest graphics driver for my system from AMD and latest wifi drivers from github and it now running without issues.
