Ubuntu 14.04 Update results in lost access to Windows Shares over wireless network

Asked by Bryan Hadfield

I am fairly new to Ubuntu having installed Version 14.04 on a HP Probook 4710s a few months ago. It took a little time to get everything set up and working but for the last three months or so everything worked well. Then, a few days ago I allowed the software updater to install the latest updates and now have the following problems:

1. I can no longer access a printer connected to a desktop machine running Windows 7 over my wireless network. This was previously working perfectly. I have access to the wireless network and can access the internet.

2. I can no longer access shared files and folders on the desktop machine. This was also working before the updates.

3. When I start Nautilus and select Browse Network is shows the desktop machine by its name “STUDY” and lists Type “Unknown”, Modified “Unknown” and Location “network:///” . When I double click it I see two sub-folders named “print$” with the location “smb://study/” and “Ubuntu_Documents” also with the location “smb://study/”. Double clicking the Ubuntu_Documents folder shows this as mounted under “Network” but looking at what is in it, it is actually the Home Documents folder of my Ubuntu user account. I have no access to the files on the desktop machine STUDY.

4. Finally, what may be connected or not but started with the same update, I have a built in SD card reader on the HP Laptop in which I have a 32GB card. This now mounts as “Read Only” and I can no longer write to it.

I am not familiar with the Linux terminal or its numerous commands and have no idea where to begin solving these problems. Any help would be appreciated.

Bryan.

I have been trying to find a solution to the SD Card problem referred to in item 4 of my original question. I decided to take the SD card out of the HP laptop and plug it into my camera. The camera was hppy to write to it and I took several pictures. I put the card back into the HP laptop and could read and view the pictures and could even delete them but still could not write to the card. Each time I tried to copy files to the card using Nautilus, I got an error message telling me the card was "Write only". I then put the card into my wifes Windows 7 laptop and could read and write to it without problems. I put it back into the HP laptop and shut it down to attend to other work. I have just restarted the HP and now without doing anything else can copy files to the SD card. The access to the Windows shares is still broken as descibed in my original question.

I am really confused!

Bryan.
