Blank screen on start, Ubuntu 14.04, new problem

Asked by Gary Fieldsend

I have been using Ubuntu 14.04 for about 6 months now (former Windows addict), and it has been running fine until this week. On system start, the log in screen apppears as usual, but after entering password, the screen (with background) remains for about one minute, then goes black with cursor. I am able to go to the text environment, but have little troubleshooting experience (I have also tried the troubleshooting screen to fix broken packages, etc.). I reinstalled another 14.04 alongside, and it is up and running, indicating CPU is OK? How might I determine where the bug is in the first install, and eliminate it? Can I access the files from the other 14.04? I do have GParted petition editor and synaptic package manager installed. Is it possible to repair/replace? I have kept everything updated, and there were no major changes/installs prior to problem. HP desktop Pavilion a1520n, Nvidia Geforce 6150 LE, AMD Athlon 64 X2. Thank you for any feedback.

If you press CTRL +ALT +F1 and login there do your partitions have free space. You can check with:

df -h

Will show you. Also make sure that you own your home folder by running the below command (you will see a warning but this is ok):

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER $HOME

Then run:

sudo reboot

Then test
