install problem, video, nVidea gforce 7150

Asked by Eric Berry

Hello all,

I have used ubuntu on a variety of machines, but the most recent has me stumped. It is an HP turion 64 x2 with nvidia gforce 7150 graphics. I have used the same disc successfully on compacts and net pcs, but I have now loaded ubuntu 10, 12, 14 and they all begin the process, but when the video opens after install, there are three overlapping images and it is nearly impossible to sign in or open a menu.

I have jumped out to command line, logged in and checked the graphics, result 000:12.0 VGA compatable controller: nVidia c67 (geforce 7150M/nforce630m (rev a2)

I have successfully load puppy linux without graphics issues. I believe 12 and 14 use different methods to access video.

Is there a command line fix for the video, as I can not access any gui menus?

Thanks in advance

I think you need to play with the kernel boot options, especially the vga= boot option :

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

For example: try adding the vga=771 option to the end of the Boot Options line.

I applied the above boot option to 4 different distros, 10,13,kbuntu & 14x64. It had no effect on any of them. I should also add that when the distros begin the boot process, the "ubuntu" logo is on the lower right section of the screen. when I go to the command line the login info is centered on the screen. I have not been able to scroll the screen, even in the command mode. I have to use ctrl alt f3 to go to the top of the screen and log in again, leaving only a few lines for commands.

I also tried debian last night, and all the screens were normal until the re-boot after install then the same issue, three overlapping screens centered low on the screen with garbled pixels for the top few rows.

Thanks for the previous suggestion.

I should have said 12 instead of 13

Try replacing

vga=771

with

nomodeset

at the end of the Boot Options line, as explained here:

If you try booting with an external monitor, how does the screen look there?

By the way, there is no Ubuntu 12 or Ubuntu 13 or Ubuntu 14. There are two quite different releases Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.10 (and 13.04, 13.10, 14.04 and 14.10 etc.). In future please provide the full release number!

Thanks Mark and Manfred!

My apology for being general with the version numbers. I tried 10.04, 12.04, 14.04 and kbuntu and 14.04 X64.

Boot with an external monitor shows a normal screen on both the laptop and the external monitor. I have not tried nomodset yet.

I think I will try re-installing the most recent distro with the external monitor and see what happens then.

Thanks and I will let you know how it works.

Regards - Eric

Setting thread status back to "answered", because nomodeset boot option has not been tested yet....

Just a short message to say thanks. I reinstalled using the external monitor, then added nomodeset to the advanced boot process and the graphics worked. I was then able to add the latest nvidea drivers or x-org/.

All seems ok now and thanks for the advise!!
