file synaptic.conf is empty

Asked by Stephen Russell

I can not use synaptic on my personal computer OS ubuntu 14.10. It says that I don't have administrator privileges. Of course I do have privileges. Following answers to similar problems from the FAQ I find that the file, synaptic.conf is empty. That is, gedit doesn't show any lines so searching to replace the OS parameter of course fails.

How do I fix this problem?

Sorry to waste your time. I solved the problem by removing Synaptic using the software center, then selecting all possible optional add on's and installing Synaptic again. I don't know whether or not the synaptic.conf file exists, but I guess it does because synaptic now opens asking for my password, and behaves as though it will work. I still need to try it but wanted to post this before anyone wasted time on the question. If it still doesn't work, that will be a different issue I expect.
