openshot wont open MP4's that I have made on my phone, keep getting error message format not supported. any Ideas / suggestions welcome

I want to edit some footage I have taken on my phone and make it into a short compilation including some JPEG's, however when I try to import and edit them I keep getting a " format not supported" error message.
I have tried this on other editing software also and none seem to be up to task. I do not want to have to resort to a ms based machine. Can anyone help?

Have you tried other video editing tools in Linux?

Do you have the correct codecs installed? What is output of?
