How to get grave accent

Asked by N.Thatcher

In French, I am able to get all accents, apart from accent grave. I have changed the keyboard layout to International AltGr dead keys, but cannot work out accent grave.

How do you get the acute accent?
The grave accent should be similar.

What keyboard layout are you using? If it is international with AltGr, then the grave accent is on the top row leftmost key. see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/KB_US-International.svg/900px-KB_US-International.svg.png

You have to press that key before the letter where you want to put the account on.

What keyboard layout have you currently selected?

What changes have you done since the other accents have worked until the moment that they do no more work?

What do you get if you press the grave key and letter e?
What do you get if you press the acute key and letter e?

You wrote in your original question "... changed the keyboard layout to International AltGr dead keys ...". What keyboard layout did you have selected before?

Do you have a language indicator in the top right corner of the screen where you can select different keyboards (different languages)?

Sorry I didn't notice the other questions. Here are the answers:
1. I made many changes but changed them back all to the original.
2. When I press grave + e and also grave + a I get the grave accent on
the letter but I have to type them quickly in succession.
I get no other accents and no cedilla for c.
3 When I press e for aigu accent I get e.
4. I think that I had English (UK) only; it's my grandson who introduced
English (International AltGr dead key) followed by English (UK).
5. Yes I have an icon at the top of my screen showing English
(International AltGr dead key) with a bullet and underneath English (UK).

Thank you for your help

To verify whether the keyboard selection works as expected and that the what the keyboard layout really is, can you please select the international keyboard with the language selector icon and in a response to this question type all letters on the keyboard (one with caps, and once without).

This should give something like

`1234567890-=
~!@#$%^&*()_+
qwertyuiop[]\
QWERTYUIOP{}|
etc. etc.

I hope you are aware that for putting an accent on a letter you have (in a "dead keys" keyboard layout) to press the accent key first, release it, and then separately press the vowel key.

What do you get if you press and release
` and space
` and a
` and e
´ and space
´ and a
´ and e

(There should be no difference whether you type them rapidly in succession, or if you press and release the accent key, wait a minute and then press the vowel key.)

The US-international keyboard should produce c with cedilla with AltGr+, (press and hold the right Alt key and press the comma key, then release both).
What do you get with AltGr-m ?

I don't know what you mean by language selector icon, I can't see any
icon with this name. The keyboard layout screen displays 2 items :
English (International AltGr dead keys) and English (UK). The layout
chart at the top of my screen gives me a picture which, I believe, is
that of the international keyboard.
I typed as you advised all letters on the keyboard with caps and
without. There is no sign \ at the end of the line qwerty...etc. , and
no sign | at the end of the same line in caps. I get these signs at the
of the line asdfg....etc. with out and with caps. on the bottom line I
get < instead of \ and, with caps, > instead of |.
I pressed AtlGr key then
` and space and got exactly that
` and a I got à
` and e i got è sometimes but most of the time I got `e
I don't find the acute accent on its own on the international
keyboard, so I was unable to try a or e with it.
I am able to get the circonflexe accent on capital a  but not on E ^E,
and not on small letters a and e.
I am unable to get the cedilla , I get a comma ,

It seems that my instructions were no clear.
What I called "language selector" indeed should have been named "keyboard selector" (the icon in the top right corner).

Please switch to "English (UK)" and then switch back to "English (International AltGr dead key)"
And then press all keys in sequence and paste the full output into this question document that we can verify the results to find an image that resembles your keyboard selection.

Ok, it really seems to be the layout as shown in http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/KB_US-International.svg/900px-KB_US-International.svg.png with the only deviation that the rightmost key from row 2 has been moved to row 3 and you have an extra <> key to the left of the fourth row.

What do you get if you press:

AltGr+' and then e ?
AltGr+,
AltGr+m
Shift+AltGr+,

("+" denoting that you press the keys at the same time, i.e. press the first one and while you keep it pressed, press also the other one; or for the last combination: press and hold "shift" and press and hold "AltGr" and press and release "," and then release the first two)

Please copy the output into this question document that we can see the results.

Which key did you press when I wrote about AltGr? It has to be the "right Alt key", the key just right of the space bar (the one with blue text on it on http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/KB_US-International.svg/900px-KB_US-International.svg.png )

When I referred to keys like ' I was talking about the key that is in the position where in that picture the ' letter is printed.
This might differ from what you have printed on your keys!

I pressed the AltGr on the right of the space bar.

In the picture there are two keys which show the sing ', one is the key
with number 9 which gives
9 and not '; and the other one is the penultimate key at the end of the
third row which gives ' .

I hope that I have answered your comments. I still don't get the accents
and cedilla.

There seems to be something wrong with your AltGr key.
What you have provided is the output to be expected when AltGr is NOT pressed.
Do you have the possibility to test another keyboard, to verify if that might be a hardware problem with your keyboard?
