no sound device , how to investigate

I am new to Xubuntu, thanks for this help it pointed me to the right direction

The command 'sudo gedit etc/modules' did not work , I used gksudo to launch mousepad with root privilege to edit the modules file, and added the line 'snd-cs4236'
