Unity user desktop failure

My Precise unity desktop will not appear & seems to loopback to gdm or lightdm after password entry! I can login using gdm or lightdm to root & only run it's desktop. I can only login to my account using tty or terminal, but user desktop will not boot.

Actually, I cannot access root using lightdm, unless there is a trick to do it from there I haven't discovered yet!

I get yhese messages when I try any commands -
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory /var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Errors were encountered while processing:
mysql-server-5.5
mysql-server.

Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer runnig, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. <- # Something not tried yet & need intructions to get the execution right for this command.
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporary unavailable) on X server ":0" after 7 requests (7 known processes) with 0 remaining.

And User accounts can't be unlocked without Unlock button in top right!

Reboot and login to the Unity 2D session
