I suggest you test your RAM using Memtest86 from Grub as a good starting point

Thanks Andrew. Tried memtest86 - no problem with RAM. I think it's something to do with 14.10 issues with radeon HD cards. The system seems to boot twice. First attempt fails and the monitor goes to sleep. It then awakes again and usually, but not always, manages to launch desktop.

Sounds like a race situation, when it succeeds the right process succeeds fist. I suggest you report a bug.

You do realize that Utopic is only supported til July 2015....

Maybe the upgrade in April will resolve the issue :)
