Install wants to install grub but can not. Select where

Asked by David

I am installing ubuntu 14.10 over 14.01. I am getting a question about Grub. I am asked which partion to load Grub to and that if in doubt load to all drives or partions. The problem is that the screen where I am to select which one will not allow me to select anything. Is there a special key for putting an x or check in the select box? I can not complete the install without selecting. I may be able to not load to anything which is advised against but I probably will not boot up again.

Anyone got a suggestion. (Meanwhile my computer is waiting for an input)

Use TAB and ENTER.

When you aay "Ubuntu 14.01" I assume you mean Ubuntu 14.04 as 14.01 doesn't exist.

You do realise that 14.10 is only supported til July this year and 14.04 is LTS and supported til April 2019?

Why the upgrade at all?

Thank you for the response. I was going too fast and typed the wrong thing. It is 14.04. 14.04 worked great at first then began to not respond to software updates, etc. In general became unstable. From the beginning I wanted to also use XP which was on the same harddrive in a different partion I had the selection but it never would boot just return to the boot menu. I lived with that since I could still access the XP files and wine worked at first but not after 14.04 became unstable. This is why I wanted to try 14.10

Tab does move to the select box but enter just goes to the same menu that asks if you want to continue without installing Grub.

Use tab to navigate from selection box to selection box, press space to set/unset a tickmark and press enter to finish.

The space bar was what I was missing.

Thank you so much!
