no libreoffice 4.3.5 available on Update Manager

Asked by Nic Knox

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 and am trying to report a bug in libreofice calc.
LO bugzilla says that the LO version that Synaptic says I have installed [1:4.2.7] is out of date.
bugzilla wants me to test for the bug on 4.3.5 BUT Synaptic and Update Manager say 4.2.7 IS the latest version.
1/ What's going on please?
2/ Will loading 4.3.5 from the LO website cause problems/clashes?

If the install is via debs then it will be fine.
The version has not been updated because their are packages with more significant issues.

If you run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

You will have the newer version

thanks - great 'service'!
"significant issues" makes me nervous! Had a few spreadsheets wrecked by the bug in LO 4.2.6 that I had to rebuild.
Is there a simple way to find out the reasons those who run Synaptic are being cautious?

[side isues: Is this all linked to the the old adage "If it ain't broke ....."?
Unfortunately Ubuntu itself is not immune - I suppose it keeps the developers interested to try to make it look/perform like the latest Microsoft child's picturebook, but not of much relevance to us low-level types who want something simple, familiar, stable and QUICK! .......... Just had to reboot an old machine running Windows95 - what a joy to work with compared to the newer MS stuff! Seriously considering MINT.]

ah, but from what I've seen, the Ubuntu of old maybe? [eg no Unity?] - need to find space to look at it properly

You can install the Cinnamon desktop on Ubuntu to replace Gnome and it will look like Ubuntu did before the change to Unity

thanks - I'm assuming "their are packages with more significant issues" means developers have prioritised the issues with packages OTHER THAN Libreoffice higher than checking LO 4.3.5 for inclusion on Update Manager.

Yes. Unless there is a massive reason to update a package then it will be left. This is especially true in LTS releases. Ubuntu is not a rolling release distribution as it is aI med at newcomers to Linux. Canonical want users to have a solid experience, so packages are tested more in the LTS as well as fewer updates. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Just because a new version comes out does not get the package updated the next day. It's not how ubuntu functions. If you want bang up to date stuff then something like Debian unstable or Arch will suit you but they do not come with the same stability as Ubuntu as they are rolling releases.
