Ubuntu 14.04 LTS won't load on a MacBook Air with OS 10.10.1

Purchased a Ubuntu 14.04 CD from Canonical in the UK for around $35. When I try and install , the CD does not recognize that the Mac OS 10.10.1 is there and overwrites/destroys it. I have tried repartitioning the Mac HD and formatting the 2nd sector as FAT 32-no luck. I have tried every combination that is available short of reformatting the HD.
Some of the older versions of Ubuntu had an install option to simply add the program rather than reformatting. Need help.
