Ubuntu not working right after failed upgrade

Asked by miked

Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 Alpha 5 from Alpha 4 via Upgrade
root@AMD1GHZ-desktop:~#
Start-Up:
Preparing Restricted Drivers -Failed
Mounting Local FileSystem -Failed
Checking minimum spaces in /tmp -Skips
This computer boots to Login screen:
after typing in Login name, & Password, screen goes to Light tan and that's it.
This started happening after failed update ealier yesterday, restarting computer caused computer to not restart right.
The failing upgrade has since been fixed, but I'm not able to take advantage of it because internet connection no longer works properly on that computer.
Trying recovery Kernels results in light tan window also.
Terminals work, but internet connection doesn't.

/libxklavier/3.4-2
caused broken system.
I have dropped the file from /libxklavier/3.4-3 in the /var/cache/apt/archives/ directory
(libxklavier12_3.4-3_i386.deb)
how to I install it from text mode ?
without internet access unless I use a Live C.D. and login as root with limited access because Live C.D. root login doesn't work right with Alpha 5.
I have write access to local hard drive, & access to 4 icons, but that is it, no inter-active desktop background, or any tasks bars(not top or bottom).
