ipod 5G will not mount in 14.04

Asked by Jim Stokes

Ipod 5g will appear on task bar on left of screen when I plug it in, but I cannot open it. When I use Clementine, Banshee, Gtkpod I get a popup message that says it's unmountable.

I had previously been able to mount it, but tracks that I moved onto it, using synch or just drag/drop, appeared while connected to the computer, but disappeared as soon as I disconnected it. In addition, it seemed to scramble all the music that was on the ipod, such that the titles were all there but the screen would show it skipping through songs without playing any of them.

After following some other on-line suggestions, I completely re-set the ipod back to factory, save for the operating system, using itunes in Windows before trying it again. But it is not mountable. The following are installed: ifuse; ubuntu restricted extras; libimobiledevice .

I'd like to manage music using linux apps instead of itunes. Is this not possible?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

When you last unplugged the device, did you use the safe remove feature before you physically unplug the device?

Yes, used the safe remove feature before physically unplugging. Just did it again to make sure.

Thanks.

Anyone have any other suggestions about how to get my ipod to mount? I keep getting the error 'cannot mount ... ipod'.

I'd like to stop using windows and itunes to manage the ipod.

Thanks for any help.

You have a device which is designed by Apple to work exclusively with Windows or Mac. If you buy Android devices then they will work with anything as the storage is presented in a generic way.

You could run Virtualbox and use Windows there (requnreserved licence and install media) to manage the device but you have generated the issue by subscribing to Apple's crap. I've seen people have them work but you can get around it by installing openssh-server then connecting to your PC over wifi using an SFTP client (I assume there are SFTP clients in the Apple store).

Maybe there are guides on YouTube. I'd just get a new phone especially if you want to ditch Windows.

Can you help with this problem?
