Unable to run ubuntu 14.4 on a new disk

Asked by wisdomnko

I have just purchase a new 1 tera byte drive and installed Windows 7 first and then installed Ubuntu 14.4. After discussion with my spouse we deciced to remove windows so I re-installed ubuntu and choose option two to do a clean install. Everything went well up to the end and when rebooted I can a green colourful screen. I have restarted twice and each time the same happens. I then tried to re-install window and I got the messsage that the drive does not contain recognizable file system. What should I do now?

Should I install Ubuntu alongside ubuntu 14.4 Lts or should I Erase ubuntu and re-install (which I did already but not working) or something else option. I tried this but I am stuck. I have sda1 (ext4) as 9876 GB and sda5 (linux-swap) as 12.6 GB
/dev/sda
/dev/sda1 ext 4 -----ubuntu
/dev/sda5 swap
If I say install I get no root file system defined. What should the setting be?

What should /dev/sda1 ext 4 be. Should I choose FAT32 file system? what should the mount point be?/ or /boot etc.
The same applies for /dev/sda5 swap. Which settings should I choose?

Does the system have a make and model?
Is the OS fully updated?

it was a clean new hard drive which I bought today. There was no OS. The old hard drive had gone bad. I first installed Window7 using system restore DVDs it worked ok. The network driver was not picked up by window 7. So I decided to install ubuntu alongside windows 7. All was well until I ran into a black or purple screen. I then a re-install replacing Window 7 meaning I lost all drivers. When I booted up I ran into black or purple screen again. After much research, I found the article how to replace quiet splash with nomodeset command which worked and I got it but all my button were huge. I followed the directions but it appears that I lost my network drivers as I now do not have internet anymore. Going in circles.
