How to change a manual configuration into ath9k configuration?

Asked by Sabrina Maharani

'm trying to install the Tp-Link TL-WN722N on Ubuntu 14.04, following the steps on 'How to install driver for TP-Link TL-WN722N on Ubuntu 14.04?'.

But I mistakenly choose a manual configuration instead of doing sudo make defconfig-ath9k, and it went on and on with 'Y/n' 'm/N' question, so I closed the terminal and reopen a new one to start it over.

When I realised what I did wrong I try to redo it again hoping it'll ask me the question of which configuration I'd like to choose like it did before, but whenever I think I should get to the part when I pick the right configuration it just went on and on with CC and LD terms that never ending.

What should I do to cancel the manual configuration and choose the ath9k instead?

Here is the link to the steps that I followed: http://askubuntu.com/questions/512727/how-to-install-driver-for-tp-link-tl-wn722n-on-ubuntu-14-04

Thank you.

We expected that you provide the answer to actionparsnip's question in a new comment of this question document. We did not notice that you have changed the original question text instead.

Please follow steps 1 to 6 in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure with the only deviation, that in step 3 you should not create a new question document, but please put the output into the Message: box of this current question document that you have already created https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/259912

PC model: LG FLATRON ez T710SH

WAP: I'm not really sure with this, is it the TL-WN722N?

The Ubuntu is installed firmly as the computer program and not running it in a Live CD session.

And here's what I get from 'lspci -nn':

Ok, looks fine to me, what is the actual issue?

I'd like to connect my PC with a mobile Wifi through the TP-LINK wifi adapter TL-WN722N. But I don't know how to set up the adapter with the PC, whenever I plugged it in, the light turns green but then I don't know what to do next. That's why I tried to follow the guides which on my half way through it I made the mistake of choosing a manual configuration instead of the 'sudo defconfig-ath9k' (Part Two, fifth command).

Because of that I can't proceed through the rest of the guide. I've tried to redo it all over again but to no avail, so just wanting on how to fix that mistake I made or if there's any other way to set it up.

Your last output shows that your WLAN device is working (it lists "unboltievable" and "Pearly" as available networks). You are already using the ath9k_htc driver, so there is no need for trying any additional installation.

You just have to use the network icon in the top right corner of your desktop to select the right WLAN network and provide username and password if required.

Really?? :0
Okay, so the next question would be how do I pick the WLAN network? There is nothing on my top right corner of my desktop, I've look through all the menu and still couldn't find it. :(

When I open the Network Setting, there are 'General' tab, 'DNS' tab and 'Host' tab, but from all those three I couldn't see the WLAN network available that I can pick.

You should have an enty "Edit Connections..." when you click on the network settings icon.

If you don't find that, open a terminal and try the command
nm-connection-editor

Use the button "Add..." with "Wi-Fi" to select the SSID and enter access information.

See http://lubuntuhowto.blogspot.co.at/2014/06/wifi-network-manager-missing-on-lubuntu-1404.html for some screen shots.

It works now!

At first, right after I add the new wifi connection a box comes up and says that the computer is connected already yet somehow I still couldn't open any website. Then I tried the "nm-applet" trick but still didn't work. Later after some extra googling and still couldn't find an alternative way to help me out show the connection icon on the desktop, I tried to look for a new clue on my own and found a way to add an aplet on the panel from "Panel Setting".

From there on all i have to do is changing the connection name from "lo" to "wlan0" and voila!

Thank you so much for your help. It is such a relief for someone who never use lubuntu before. The internet works fine now with the PC. :) Thanks again!
