How do I start Unity after password is accepted

Asked by ealthuis

After upgrade from 12.04 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS when I enter my password and it is accepted I do not get the Unity screen.

HOW and from where do I start Unity, or how do I update the correct script to start Unity after the password is accepted?

Does the system have a make and model?
Did you use proprietary video drivers?
Is it the same if you make a new user then log in as that?

System: Dell Vostro 3555 laptop with AMD processor and video
Proprietary drivers were installed, removed and installed again
I created a "standard" user and the unity shown is similar to booting a test drive from a USB stick or CD, that is a purple background and a small list of launch icons

All functions such as NFS are available, however when I tried to start an existing VirtualBox, a new one was suggseted.
All this seems correct.
