Could not write bytes: Broken Pipe 12.04-current

boot up and before login screen
error message displays briefly before X starts
Could not write bytes: Broken Pipe
this causes an unstable session that will crash out of X after awhile
with a flash of a several lines in hex digits before restarting X

memtest is ok
hard disk is fully tested
write permissions are correct in all users directories

I've looked through other reports / questions
nothing matches

system will run Linux Lite & Sparky Linux etc..

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; free -m; apt-cache policy xorg lightdm
