Hyper-threading cannot be enabled even with ht=on option

Asked by inkybutton

Hi,
I have a Pentium-4 1.6GHz processor, but I am not sure if Hyper-Threading is supported. But, according to the system log (/var/log/syslog), the Hyper-Threading function is supposed to exist (it says "localhost kernel: [17179569.480000] CPU: Hyper-Threading is disabled") so I downloaded the 2.6.15-27-686(SMP) kernel image. I also modified the GRUB boot menu file (/boot/grub/menu.lst) according to the instructions provided on a forum. (The modified line looks like this: # kopt=root=/dev/hda7 ro ht=on) I restarted GRUB, and rebooted. I didn't notice any performance gain, and in the system log, it still says "localhost kernel: [17179569.480000] CPU: Hyper-Threading is disabled"

I checked the BIOS setup. There doesn't seem to have an option to turn on or off Hyper-Threading.

Does this mean that the processor doesn't support HT, or is it Linux/Ubuntu (6.06)'s fault?

Thanks!

Can you type the following command and paste the output here:-

$ cat /proc/cpuinfo

If your CPU supports HT you should see two CPUs listed (processor 0 and processor 1, but the physical id will be the same) - for a dual core cpu you would see two cpus listed with different physical ids.

I guess my processor doesn't support HT... but still why does it display "Hyper-threading disabled"? I get that even when I am using i386 kernel...

Ahh, good news! Your CPU does support HT - note the "ht" at the end of the "flags" section?

You need to double check the BIOS for an HT setting, also enable ACPI (if there is an option for that) and make sure that you are using an SMP kernel. That should be all that's required.

Nope. In BIOS's menu, "Advanced BIOS configurations > CPU Features", only "Delay Prior to Thermal" and "Execute Disabled Bit" are offered. I am using an SMP kernel, and I am including /var/log/syslog (latest entry only). Thanks for helping! :)

According to http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-021710.htm, an HT-capable BIOS is required to master the awesome power of Hyper Threading. I think my BIOS isn't. Should I flash the BIOS memory and install a new one? I hope it's not too dangerous... (I am newbie at this, but I know that flashing your BIOS memory can easily turn your computer into a paper weight.)

Heh. I have never had a BIOS update go wrong in maybe ~12 years of applying them. Go for it :)

Can you help with this problem?
