cd-rom1

Asked by HES

My system list with Computer File Browser under 'Places' hes, Desktop, File System, Floppy Drive, CD-ROM 1, Trash etc. To the right of that under 'Name' Floppy Drive, CD-ROM 1, CD-RW/DVD+RW Drive, CD-RW/DVD+/-RW Drive, HP Photosmart 7400 & Filesystem. When I load disc into either, or both the DVD's they show up under the "Name columb below the CD-ROM 1. I have just ignored the CD-ROM 1 until now. That is it don't exist, and I treat it as such. However I am attempting to get the DVD's to play DVD's. I have went to Terminal and typed in the following; sudo apt-get install libdvdread3 libxine1-ffmpeg totem-xine build-essential debhelper fakeroot. It takes off and does its thing. However it comes back with, "Media change: please insert the disc labeled
'Ubuntu 7.10 _Gutsy Gibbon_ - Release i386 (20071016)' in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter", doing that does nothing. I have tried it in both drives several times. I also tried entering, "sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh", which I thought I was supposed to do. It to does its thing and comes back with the same request. It will not read the CD. I am thinking now that it is trying to read it in CD-ROM 1. What is CD-ROM 1, and how do I fix this problem?

Be sure there are not any cdrom reference rows into your /etc/apt/sources.list

Please remove or put a # sign at beginning of the rows

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Thank you

HOW DO I CHANGE IT. I put the cursor there, click it, put the pound
sign followed by a space, but the next time I call it up it is without
the pound sign.

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Change put a "#" at beginniing of the line or completely remove the row:

deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 7.10 _Gutsy Gibbon_ - Release i386 (20071016)]/ gutsy main restricted

Save and exit

OK, I admit that was pretty dumb of me. I was rushing back and forth
between here and the kitchen. Still it was stupid. I got your
instructions carried out and everything is in good working order. The
problem is solved. Thank you very much for your help, and you patience.

AS stated above my problem is solved. I am just closing it out, because the message above did not do that. Thanks again marcobra, for putting up with my stupidity. That has got to be a classic. "but I don't see any reference to a CD ROM" with the sentence right below it having cdrom as the second word. You guys have got to be saints.
