software EXE issues

Asked by Tom

I am having a hard time finding the proper software. There are soooo many websites with software for Ubuntu from places I don't know. First, is there a place where I can get everything I need? I am used to Win XP and am new to Ubuntu. I am used to the download icon installed to my desktop, then double clicking to install. I am horrifically confused as how to "type in some code somewhere", or, "download another program just to download" simple software. I have an AMD 64 2800+ proc, Asus k8s-mx Mobo, Nvidia 5200 AGP card, and all are operational. I have no hardware issues using Ubuntu. I need to take video clips (music videos) and put them on one DVD-R. I would like to eventually completely ween myself off of WinDOZE. I also would like to offer my youth group (I am a youth pastor) a better, more stable, secure, and reliable OS for Video rendering and presentations. Music is also a big concern for me. I have a Microsoft VX-3000 webcam that I'm sure I will not be able to use anymore (no Ubuntu drivers or software I'm sure). I have visited some "how to" sections and they are confusing because they are written by folks who write the software. I do not understand this lingo. I really need a place to go that is written for dummies, because Ubuntu is supposed to be for the "code illiterate" anyway. I understand We are dealing with FREE stuff here, but I paid for Microshafts services and got the shaft too. I hope the Ubuntu developers can come up with a "one place service" site with a complete dummy breakdown of what to do, and how to do it. Links to tried and true software (not 20 versions of the same stuff to pick from) that says "This is for Ubunto 7.10 AMD 64 version". If we could do this and make it uber easy to install, then millions more folks would climb on the Ubuntu bandwagon.
Thanx,
Tom

The Ubuntu despositories have most of the software that runs natively on Ubuntu. To use a webcam, you want the Gnome "Cheese" program. To get it, do this at a terminal:

sudo apt-get install cheese

For video you will probably want avidemux or kino.

The Synaptic Package Manager under System-->Administration should have it. Click there and you can search for packages that you need.

Let me know if this did not answer your question.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Tom for more information if necessary.
