Problem with the sound at Asus P5B DLX/WIFI-AP, P965, Socket-775, ATX

Asked by Söder

Maybe you can help me with my problem. I installed Ubuntu 7.10 this weekend, and I cant get sound working. Only through my analog headphones.
In mp3s, vidoes, and videos with ac3.
BUT, in XBMC, the latest, or at least the version from this weekend, I get sound from i.e some .mkv-movies in ac3, through my coax to my reciever, but not mp3s and soo...

What do I have do in Ubuntu to make the sound work in digital?
I use the automatic options in preferences.

Do you have the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package installed?

Can you please post the output of "cat /proc/asound/cards"? Thank you.

The answer to the first question is no. I will try to install that.

And to the second line, I have to ask how to get this "output". =)
I guess I have to write something in the terminal.

Can you please tell me what to write?
=)

Northern lights wants you to type exactly the following to your Terminal and then copying and pasteing to here:
cat /proc/asound/cards

Quoting Riku: "Northern lights wants you to type exactly the following to your Terminal and then copying and pasteing to here:
cat /proc/asound/cards"
--> Exactly.

If you think you don't have that very package installed, enter a terminal (navigate to "Applications > Accessories > Terminal") and type "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras". Most likely that will do the trick immediately. If not, it's still neccessary on the way. Also,if not, post that output...

soder@soder-desktop:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfebf8000 irq 22

It didnt work with only "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras"

And I dont really know what settings to use in system/pref./sound.
Shall I use autodetect on everything, or use the AD198x Digital? When I use Autodetect or AD198x Analog I get sound in my headphones, but I cant get the work in my speakers connected to my reciever, thats connect by COAX.

What Mixer shall I use?

Intel High Definition Audio had been problematic in Ubuntu for a while. Unfortunately I don't own a similar sound device myself.

The following link
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto
might just help.

Aha, soo if I just try to disable just HD audio in the BIOS it might work...
Or maybe I just dont do anything at all for the moment, though I only wants to learn ubuntu a little bit before I install it on my HTPC, and that computer dont use HD Audio..

Disabling your chip in the BIOS will not solve anything - same outcome as the driver not working properly: no sound.

If you will need sound on your regular comp but won't need it on your laptop - most likely you won't have the same problem then. If you need it, follow the link I posted...
