upgrade 12.04 LTS from 32 bit to 64 bit 14.04 LTS

Asked by ealthuis

Upgraded from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS works, but 12.04 is 32 bit.
Need to upgrade to 14.04LTS 64 bit as VBox vms is set for 64 bit.
I need to install in VBox 64bit Windows 7,which cannot be done on 32 bit VBox.

You have to reinstall from CD / USB if you want to change architecture. Run a full backup then wipe the current Ubuntu partitions off. You can then install with the 64bit Ubuntu install media to the freed space.

Why do you need 64bit Windows 7 in a VM? Working on SQL?...
