Battery Callibration

Asked by John Skottis

I have a dell xps 15 laptop and my issue is that while the battery of the laptop is rated at 91.0 Wh Ubuntu show that Energy is considered full when it reaches 73.2 Wh, which is quite a difference from the available capacity. I am a newbie so I don't know what information you require to solve the issue.

The two value have a different meaning. The larger one is the design capacity. It is the maximum power the new battery can store under optimal condition. The other is the actual capacity at the last time the battery did not accept more power, measured by the monitoring system of the battery. The second value is always smaller than the first, this has many reason, but the most important is the fact that batteries degrade over time. Nowadays LiPo batteries degrade not as much as older battery type, how much depends on how far you discharge them every time. To get the best out of the battery for long try to keep the battery as full as possible.

BTW: a battery is usually considered due for replacement when the actual capacity is 80% of the design capacity. Your's is at 80.4%. The value is not fixed and does not mean you have to replace it right now, but the battery will start to degrade faster and faster.
