Wanted to install ubuntu but now it won't let me launch windows 8 anymore

Asked by Ushio x

Hello!

I really wanted to install ubuntu alongside windows 8 so I looked up quite a few guides.
It all seemed to go well until I came to the part where you're supposed to choose "install ubuntu alongside windows 8" but instead that never came up for me, it just said I currently have no operating system.

Which lead me to a video saying I have to disable UEFI which I did, but it still didn't show up after that and now it won't let me launch windows 8 at all and I don't know how to open advanced boot menu without being able to go to windows 8.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me with this, I don't really have a problem with ubuntu but I do really need windows 8 aswell for alot of things :/

Thanks!

Can you boot into Ubuntu?
If yes, open a terminal window and execute the command

sudo fdisk -l

You will be asked to enter your password as confirmation for an administrative action, and you will not see anything when entering your password (no echo, not even '*' placeholders).

Please copy/paste the output of that command into this question document that we can verify the result.

Hello, thanks for the reply :)

I am able to boot ubuntu yes, I'm currently only using the "try ubuntu without installing".
When I executed the command in the terminal it didn't ask for a password or anything like that but I got this:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

You may need to go back into bios and re-enable the UEFI to get windows to boot. Once in Windows, go to Admin Tools, Computer Management, then select the Disk Management tool. Shrink your partition to a size you would like for Ubuntu. For me, I have set mine to be 100 gigs. This will create a new partition and it will show as unalocated space. No need to format. Just reboot and this time you should get an option to install along side Windows 8.

Also, I believe I have mine set to legacy support in bios with no secure boot and I am able to boot both windows 8.1 and ubuntu. It's odd though, as grub does not immediately come up for me. When I want to boot into Ubuntu, I have to press F12, that first attempts a network boot and then when that fails grub comes up and I can boot ubuntu.

Do you mind explaining how I can go into bios when all I get when I start my computer is black screen with some codes, only way I can launch ubuntu is by having my usb pen in the computer? I'm very bad at this kind of stuff :c
