Failed to load COM32 file gfxboot.c32

Asked by ealthuis

This morning I upgraded 14.04 LTS to 14.10, when finished, restarted the system and ended up with purple screen with the words 'Ubuntu 14.10' in the bottom left corner. Another restart same thing.
 Conclusion a problem,

So I had a USB drive with 14.04LTS, used that to rebuild my system. when resstarting, I was greeted by a "low resolution screen".
The system would not restart properly there after.

I created a new 14.04.1 LTS USB drive, surey that would work....

I inseted the USB drive and booted it and the reult was:
Failed to load COM32 file gfxboot.c32

The above statement was repeated continuously until I shut the system down.

I am at a loss what to do, not only that I cannot use my laptop at all and am concerned about loosing data.

Help is needed?

If your data is important then why did you

1) Not take a backup before making such a huge change to your system

2) Why do you not have a regular backup in place? What if the drive motor or drive IDE failed. ..where is your data?

Did Trusty (Ubuntu 14.04) work ok? With Trusty being LTS and supported til April 2019 and Utopic (Ubuntu 14.10) only being supported til July 2015... Why the upgrade?

Important data are backed up regularly, it is not the point.
Trusty worked just fine, Libreoffice idoes not..hence the upgrade.
Never in the seven years that I have used Ubuntu Linux has an upgrade failed until 14.10.

Now I would like a way to install either 14.04LTS or any of its successors without pulling the small amount od hair I still have out,
Will you help me?

If the OS works, why upgrade...especially as the support of Trusty is massive compared to Utopic's. You fixed something that wasn't even broken.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you made the new install media from?
How did you put the data on to the USB stick?

Did not MD5 test, don't know how.
Stick was made from a just made download, using "startup disk creator"
A similar problem happened with a stick of 14.10, that is a missing file.

Just did the MD5 test on the downloaded file, they match.
Also remade the USB stick, will try the install once again....

Be sure to try the tool from pendrivelinux as well as unetbootin

Make sure you format the stick to FAT32 before putting the data on the stick

FAT32 done, checked the stick to be OK, the install onto the stick showed no errors.

installed the stick. booted the computer and the same error as bove came up..

I will now check your other suggestions...
Pendrivelinux appears to have only an .exe.file
the other won't start after setting the x bit

As an aside, the i386 version installed without any problems on an old 386 computer.

I am no closer to a solution.

Can I get an older version 14.04LTS without the .1 attached??

Hi Ealthuis. The first link will take you to a complete list and in that list I found the second link. I've only just downloaded it so I can't say whether or not it works but I am hopeful!

I "upgraded" to 14.10 and, when I wanted to return, I found I had the same problem as you do. I feel your pain! ;-)

I hope it works for you.

Ken.

Hello Ealthuis. The copy of 14.04 (without .1) that I downloaded from the link I provided above works perfectly. I installed it on and old hard drive and booted my machine from that. I then created a live usb using Startup Disk Creator. The usb works perfectly too. I'm a happy puppy! :-)

I meant to add that I did not do any updating. I have a nasty suspicion that 14.04.1 may come back to haunt me so I'm going to do what I wanted to do in the first place (ditch that bloody awfull 14.10!) before allowing any updating.

Good morning Ken,

It is 5:21 PST and I am at it again, first thank you for the original info, the website etc.
I also downloaded 14.04LTS and made both a USB stick and a DVD. So far I have not succeeded in getting my system back. I am however going to make another DVD and try that. Beyond that, if no luck I have an original Ubuntu 11.10 CD. Boy when all else fails go back to something original.

I'll let you know how I make out.

Emanuel

It is 06:24 PDT, not PST, and I have made another DVD, used it I have a 14.04LTS system, but no panel and no launcher. This has happened before, and a resolution was found. I am slowly getting there.

Again Thanks

Today , after a clean install od Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (yes 10.04) I upgraded to 12.05.5 LTS, The upgrade was successful, I now have a laptop which runs Unity.

In a while after using 12.04LTS a bit I will upgrade to 14.04 LTS. A previous upgrade in April 2014 worked fine, I expect no problems.

Thanks Ken,

Good to see you happy,

My system running 12.04 LTS is working just fine,

I only need one more step, to upgrade from 32bit 12.04 to 64bit 14.04 at which point I will be able to use Virtual Box again.

I have a new question: 258353

Can you help with this problem?
