installing ubuntu 7.04 on dell inspiron 2500.

Asked by thomas

I am very new to linux. I have a dell inspiron 2500 with 256 megs of ram and a 900 mhz processor (intel). I have no trouble installing ubuntu 7.04, however, i cannot get a display. I can hear sounds for the splash screen and if i hit the tab button i can hear noise as if the program is running fine. I also have the same issue on a second computer that has 1 gig ddr ram, 3.0 ghz processor (intel) and ati vid card. please. any ideas on how to remedy this. I really like the look of linux and hear that it is an awesome program. I want to learn more and enjoy the program.

Hi Thomas and thank you for the question.

To help you, we need more information about your situation. Could you tell us if you have tried to start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode, which is selectable from the boot menu? If yes, does the same issue occur also then?

PS. Just to let you know, Ubuntu isn't just a program, it's an operating system - and what a great operating system it is. Welcome to the Linux World ;)

Then I guess the problem is that your graphics card is incompatible with current community-created ATi driver. You can install Ubuntu in that Safe Graphics mode and after the installation go to Restricted drivers manager. From there you should be able to enable closed source ATi driver, which might work better.

NOTE: If this solves your problem, do not forget to mark this question as Solved. Thank you.

Hi!
I tried to run an opengeu live-cd on this dell (but I have a pIII processor) with the same problem.
In my opinion all is related to video card, a i815 integrated video-card, so it's possible to have some graphics with vesa driver (safe mode) but it's necessary to install the package "intel_something" (actually I don't remember the exact name) to have X server functioning.
Sorry for my worst english...

Can you help with this problem?
