gimp text tool

Asked by sandra.bodkin

This is a question about GIMP. When you use the Text Tool, and write the text you want, then click on the close button , the text is inserted in your image or background. Surrounding the text is a dotted rectangle. Here is the problem: when you try to add a gradient to your text, it covers the whole area of the dotted rectangle, including your text, so you don't see the text under the gradient. Why does any change on the text included the background as well? If anyone knows, I would really appreciate an answer for this. Thanks.

Hi Sandra and thanks for your question.

First, check that you have a correct layer selected. Its name is the same as the text you typed in. You can select it in Layers. Then right-click the text layer and choose "Text to selection" like this: http://share.kserver.dy.fi/jako/gimp_layer.png . Then use Blend tool to paint the text itself with color gradient.

Hello Riku!
Thanks for your help. The Text to Selection worked. Now I just have one more question: what do you use to remove the dotted lines around the selection? Do you right click again with the mouse or do you have to do something else?

Gimp tells you the dimensions of the selected layer by displaying that dotted rectangle. It will not be saved to the image itself. If you go and pick any other layer, you'll see that then its surrounded by the rectangle.

If you meant the moving dashed line around the selection, you can unselect all by pressing Ctrl+Alt+A or by going to Selection menu and choosing None.
