Following the advice you gave in my last question I had tried it once again before posting this question. Once again I tried it. I used the contents in the link and could update. But ....

chmod +x ./fixpackage
sudo ./fixpackag

....have some problems.
Here is the output of those commands:

I copied and pasted the complete lines in the terminal and tried again. Restarted. But no change.

Can you please create a screen shot where you see this double listing, create a picture file from that, and upload it to your bug report that we can see your problem in detail.

Are you sure that both lines refer to exactly the same package? There are five packages with quite similar names. What is the output of the terminal command

dpkg -l | grep software-properties

I think the screen shot reached there. This was my first experience with screenshot.

Ok, I see that the picture shows "software-properties-gtk" in both lines.

You might try the commands in Step 9 of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure
They completely remove software-center and its data, and finally install it new.

The problem is not solved ....
I typed N for a [DEFAULT=N] .......in the output of a command line seen just above the last few lines in the link (step 9)
I copied and pasted the commands one by one in the Terminal.
I saw some choices ( some capital letters ) and I typed N since it is the default letter.

I don't know whether this caused the problem.

Can you please copy/paste all output of the commands of step 9 of the package manager troubleshooting procedure into this question document that we can check whether there is a problem visible.

What should I give if I am asked to select?.......If there is two choices (Y/N), I give Y. But that is not the problem. When there are four or five choices (as said in #11) which letter should I give if the courser flickers for few minutes?

If you do not tell us what the question is that you have on screen, how should we be able to tell you what you should answer?

Please just start from the beginning of Step 9 in the troubleshooting procedure and copy/paste all output up to the position where you do not know how to proceed further.

If I could remember it I would have posted here.

I did everything carefully. One thing I noticed was, for some commands I didn't get any output. Each time I did use the Enter key carefully.

I had rebooted and tested before sending the last post. But no improvement. The twins are there.
