LCD Display says Out Of Range after upgrade to 6.10 from 6.06

Asked by gmertr

Hi, I've upgraded from 6.06 LTS to 6.10 using the supported upgrade procedure on two computers. One went fine. However, on the other, my display just says "Out Of Range". Its a View Sonic LCD VA521-1. The samething is happening if I run 6.10 off the Live CD. My adapter is a Maxtrox Graphics MGA G200 AGP.
I've run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg a few times, but never can get the graphical mode back. I edited the file, and removed everything but 640x480, just to try to get it going.
I loaded the 6.06 Live CD, and examined the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, sections "Device", "Monitor", and "Screen" are identical to what is on my HD with 6.10.
It seems the most important clue is that 6.06 works off Live CD, while 6.10 does not. I don't know what else to look into. Host is an HP Vectra, P3, 650 MHz, 256 MB.
Thanks for any help.

Try copying /etc/X11/xorg.conf from your LiveCD session in Dapper onto your Edgy install.

Be sure to backup this file first, then overwrite it with the Dapper version.

Good idea. I copied the Dapper version to floppy, then booted the Edgy, did a <Ctrl> <alt> F1, mounted floppy, copied back over, and rebooted. Didn't work. Samething, Out Of Range. I did notice that if I do a <Ctrl> <alt> F8, I get a flashing cursor on top left, instead of Out Of Range. I tried <ctrl> <alt> + and - to cycle through the video modes, but, not sync'd up.

Apparently the preferred resolution for the 521 is 1024x768

Try editing your xorg.conf file and change the 640x480 to 1024x768 and make sure the hsync and vsync entries (dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg should have added these) are also within the monitors specs. (fh:30~62kHz, fv:50~75Hz). Also try changing the video driver from "vesa" to "mga" and vice-versa, just in case something got broken in the new version of the drivers.

Wonderfull. Changing the Driver from "mga" to "vesa" fixed it! Thank you both very much.
