kubuntu 14.10 - desktop fades away

Asked by Hans-Peter

Hi guys,

after the upgrade to kubuntu 14.10 I have this problem:

After logging in, I see the desktop and the splash screen. The items in the splash appear, and then, after a few
seconds, not only the splash screen disappears, but all of the desktop. It leaves me with a black screen, only the mouse pointer is visible. When I move the pointer to the areas, where the panels were prior to the upgrade, nothing happens. Alt-F2 gives me the app starter. I can start any application in there and working within the app is fine, but still the desktop is black.

I am not able to file a bug, the button here just brings me to a wiki. All the other doku suggest to use some applications which I cannot open. So please be so kind and make this question a bug so I can get some help.

Another Info: I am still on plasma 4, and I have already removed kwinrc, which makes no difference

best regards
Hans-Peter

Which version did you upgrade from?
What steps did you take?
If you make a new user in TTY1 and log in as the new user in kdm, is the system ok?

Hi

1) from 10.04
2)do-release-upgrade o ntty1
    upgrade completed without any error
3)I tried another user (which already existed). No problem with this user.
Splash fades away, desktop stays, panels appear.

So it seems as if the problem is user specific.
I've already removed ~/kde/share/.../kwinrc - didn't fix it.
Where else to look?

Many thanks
Hans-Peter

Did you upgrade direct from 10.04 to 14.10?

SOLVED! (somehow)

I renamed ~/.kde to ~/kde.old from tty1.
Logged in to the desktop - default desktop came up.
Kmail config, customized panels, all gone.
Rename ~/kde.old .kde from konsole (not tty1, the K terminal).
Log out - Log in -
Desktop comes up, but is still standard, all of my customizations are gone,
but kmail seems to be configured and complete.
So I'll keep that and adjust my panels to my likes.

Best regards, thanks for pointing me
into the right direction

I also experience this.
Installed 14.10 from scratch on an Acer Aspire One (netbook). The first time I logged in, everything worked fine.

Then doing an `sudo aptitude update` followed by `sudo aptitude upgrade`, then rebooted and I ran into this problem.

It's a bug, isn't it?

There are others that have had the same experience:

BTW: My install is also a 32bit installation.

Why are you using aptitude? Why not use apt-get which is in a default install?
