Use your backups to get your files....surely.

What version did you migrate from?

Did you take a snapshot before the upgrade?

You should have made a backup copy before the version upgrade to avoid the problems that you are now facing.
I see two possible approaches:
1. try starting Ubuntu in recovery mode, maybe you can get it running normally with some actions,
2. use tools to unpack the virtual hard disk to get to your files.

i am not sure from whats version i migrate, it must be the last version, i think 14.04

i have full-system-backups on all my windows systems, but not on ubutu, i miss infos how this works.

i have no snapshot startet bevore.

i try the recovery mode, and start repairing, but it not helps.

in recovery mode is an option how will start a low visual kde, but it not works.

i have no skills with the console on linux.

i try to acces the vmware9 files, but i find no programms what can this do.

it looks bad!

So you are using VMWare but didn't make a snapshot? Are you insane? That's one of the massive advantages in VMWare. You could have easily rolled back the instance to where it was before you ran the upgrade. ...It's used in industry before doing any updates in case the updates cause issues.

Talk about not knowing what tools you have. Scary.

Also with no data backup. Yet the data is important to you. .. Can you not see how preposterous this situation is?

Use the live CD in the VM and you can mount the internal partitions on the VM.

You can then copy data to another disk or even to the host system.

If you try starting the virtual machine (both normal or in recovery mode), do you get any error message? If yes, what is its exact wording?

You write that you have full backups of your windows systems. Does this include the VM virtual disk file? If that is the case, you could restore the last virtual disk file from before the moment of the failed upgrade, and this should contain a working 14.04 system.

If you do not have a backup copy of the virtual hard disk, you could try open the virtual hard disk with compression tools like 7zip to access the files in the virtual machine. (Depending on what format it is, this might require some kind of conversion before, e.g. for virtualbox from vdi to vhd etc.). Do not forget to create a backup copy before doing such things.

hello and thanks all,

i have no backups für this ubuntu, but I would appreciate a recommendation for a good application for a full backup.
at the first time i try only what is linux and what can i do with it.
after two years of testing and more and more using, i like it now.
but i have not enough time to learn all i need for full use.

an exact wording by the error message is not comming.
on different user accounts, the system stops working and hangs.

I must briefly stop the recovery due to time constraints.
but I see the following options:

a) console: copy files to an other machine (but i must first learn the basics)
b) i try open the vm-files with 7zip

Can you help with this problem?
