Unable to enter crypt password after upgrade to 14.10

Asked by Adam

I have recently upgraded from 14.04.1 to 14.10 on my Samsung R560 laptop. Everything works fine except the password splash screen during boot. I'm unable to enter my crypt password into the password box - kayboard works, but the typed text appears on the side of the screen and nothing happens. Please see the image for clarification: http://i.imgur.com/x3cPMbk.jpg - how do i fix this?

Did Trusty work ok? You do realise that Utopic is not LTS and supported only 9 months. Trusty is LTS and supported til April 2019.

Trusty did work ok. Yes, I know the difference between LTS and non-LTS releases.

More information: Unlocking the disk through recovery mode works ok.

Then why fix something that wasn't broken?

Because it is broken now? Are you suggesting I should downgrade? So why is Ubuntu even offering an option to upgrade if it just breaks what wasn't broken? Wow, I wasn't expecting an answer like that.

The OS was doing what was needed and Utopic only has 9 months support. So why the upgrade? What do you gain by upgrading?

You don't have to upgrade every time a new release pops up. If the release you have is supported and is working why make such a drastic change when the actual gain is zero?

It makes no sense.

Its like having to get Windows 8 even though Windows 7 is still supported.
