I can't boot Ubuntu from cd, usb, or from the disk loader

Asked by Andrew

I have an Acer Travelmate 5744-6492 320gb HDD and 2Gb DDR3 Memory. I downloaded Ubuntu (newest version) and it will not load. I have tried to restart from CD, as well as USB. I have downloaded the disk boot program from Ubuntu, nothing is working and I want to get away from Microsoft. If you can help me please do.

These sites have information on downloading and installing Ubuntu 14.04. Is BIOS boot order set to which installation media you are using? Be sure to do MD5sum check.

Try the boot option:

nomodeset

This may help with your Intel GPU

None of that has helped me.. The main problem is I really don't understand what you guys are talking about. I tried the restart to no avail. Also tried to install the cd booter from the cd itself... nothing. Tried from SD nothing.... It seems harder to even install than windows.

Do you still have Windows on the computer? When you try to install Ubuntu, does it give you the option to try Ubuntu? If so, does it work? Can you get into the BIOS? If so it must be set to: DVD drive or USB. The BIOS can be entered with a F key that will be shown an beginning of boot, probably the top right.

There is a setting in the BIOS (a built-in piece of software in each computer) that specifies where the computer should look for the operating system to boot.

When you turn on your computer you should see a logon on the screen for a short period, and at that moment pressing the F2 button should activate the BIOS setup dialogue. There should be an entry or category "boot" or "boot sequence". There you have to define that the CD/DVD device (or SD) is searched first before the hard disk.

You then have to insert the Ubuntu installation DVD into your optical drive and reboot the computer.

Have you carefully followed the instruction on the Ubuntu home page to create a bootable DVD?

Yes that worked. However now it is saying I need to make a partition. I want to keep windows on the computer and run it alongside windows. The only reason I am doing this is because due to my job specific things have to be done through windows.
