You can easily keep your system up-to-date with your packetmanager

sudo apt-get update
this updates the list of available software and versions

and

sudo apt-get upgrade
this upgrades your system with the newest packages

you need an active internet connection.

Hi,

Try checking which repositories are available by opening "Software Sources" (under System / Administration), then entering your password if asked.

This should bring up a window labelled "Software Sources" with a number of tabs at the top. Click on the third one along, labelled "Updates".

The window should now display a list of checkboxes -- make sure that "Important security updates (gutsy-security)" and "Recommended updates (gutsy-updates)" are checked, then click on "Close".

You should now be able to ensure that the latest updates are installed by using "Update Manager", found under "System / Administration".

Hope this helps -- my current Firefox version is 2.0.12, using only Ubuntu sources.

Regards,

Stuart

Sam,

Good comments already, but I have another idea, and a CAUTION:

Ubuntu is good at keeping itself up to date, if you have a connection
to the Internet. Mine notifies me with a little orange box in the upper
right of my screen. Clicking on this box, or System => Administration=>
Update Manager, will launch the Update Manager, which will check for
Updates, and list them all. Sometimes there is only one - other times
there may be 100+. There is an Install button to authorize installation.

*** Caution! ***

Sometimes there is a message near the top of Update Manager's
window, saying an Upgrade is available. Do not choose Upgrade if you
have not installed all of the Updates! I did this in October '07, and it
crashed my system. The Upgrade process apparently assumes you are
current on all available Updates for the version you are already using.

There is menu item in Firefox, under Help => Check for Updates, that
you can click that will download the latest version of Firefox, which will
be opened by Ubuntu's Archive Manager. That may be an option, too.
