Ubuntu 7.10 live cd problems.

Asked by John Jones

Having problems running 7.10 live cd on self-built pc. Checked hash and cd for problems, runs just fine in my laptop.

No matter which mode I try to run it in (default, safe graphics mode, oem) it show Ubuntu loading screen, then switches to a screen where it ends in a command prompt. The last line reported is

Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [OK]

From there, I can hit enter and begin a command prompt session. When I run it in verbose mode, I see

End Request I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
Buffer, I/o error, dev fd0, logical block 0

a couple times in the process of everything loading, then it keeps loading everything [OK], till it hits the running local hot scripts, then it seems to just stop at a command prompt. When I put it in my Alienware laptop, it loads straight to live without an problems. Any suggestions?

Booting live cd please try to use the "nofloppy" option and/or other parameters may help you
here the howto pass boot options and most used parameters https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

You can put more than one option at startup please try: nofloppy all_generic_ide nodma

If this don't work i suggest you to download and burn on a cd at lower speed you can do (4x)
here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
the Ubuntu alternate install cd iso image ( ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso ) you can download this cd from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/

Hope this helps

Tried some parameter combos, including the one you suggested, but no change.

I wouldn't think burn speed matters, since it runs fine on my laptop, but I'll try burning the alternate at a lower speed in the morning.

Thanks.

hmm..

The problem could be a problem with your X-Server settings.

Boot Ubuntu in Recovery Mode and then execute:-
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Select any choices that match with the current system especially the VGA driver, after the reconfiguration is complete, try out the settings by executing:-

startx

Then if it doesnt work..
I suggest you check out the download site http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Next,Choose a location near you and download the ISO. Then follow the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (Burn your cd at a lower speed say at 4x and check your MD5 sums)

Bit info about MD5 sums:
With an md5 sum you can compare the contents of files. If your .iso file is defect (this can happen when you download it), it's md5sum would be different than that one on the Ubuntu server.

To calculate the md5sum of your image file, you can use a command line tool like http://www.md5summer.org/download.html for Windows (on Ubuntu it's the 'md5sum' command). Then compare the calculated value with the ones in this list http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/MD5SUMS.
So if you have the ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso, the calculated value should be d2334dbba7313e9abc8c7c072d2af09c.

If the file has a different md5sum than expected, I would recommend to download that iso again.

Next,Make sure that all equipment is turned on. Do a clean install, delete all the partitions and this time create a separate /home and any others that you think you may need.

Here's more info about alternate CD version,
http://ubuntu-releases.cs.umn.edu/gutsy/

You can also see screenshots of partitioning here:

Hope it helps
