Firefox is having trouble connecting to web sites

Asked by Margaret Mackintosh

I think the problem is that Flash Player is no longer available for Linux. Here is the problem that I get quite often when I try to access a web site, not just a particular one:

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at weightwatchers.com.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I get the above message on all kinds of web sites. Very annoying. I even removed Firefox and installed Google Chromium. That gets the same thing only comes up differently. Weight Watchers tells me that I need to have Flash Player. Most times when I try to get the web site again it will come up. But, it should come up the first go around.

What if anything has replaced Flash Player on Linux?

Margaret

Adobe has stopped providing current version of the flash player for firefox, they only provide bug fixes for the 11.2 version.

For the Chromium browser there is the pepper flash plugin from Google that provides similar functionality.

If you have the multiverse repository enabled, you can install the pepper flash plugin with the terminal command
sudo update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree
see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Chromium/Getting-Flash

You can test whether you have a flash player installed in your browser by visiting the web page
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Hi,

I did as suggested and clicked the Flash link and I do have Flash 11.2.02 installed. This morning I opened the Package Manager and installed several different packages about Flash. One I think was the pepper flash plugin for the Chromium browser.

I was using Chromium but since for some reason I could not add pictures on ebay using this browser I went back to Firefox.

Not sure what happens exactly to make the above message come up. I disconnected my wireless router and now have the laptop directly connected to my Satellite Internet system. Still get that message sometimes.

Messages like "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at ..." usually indicate a problem in the network connection as such. I do not know the specifics of your connection to the internet, so it is hard to give advice.

Hi,

I figured it might be that. I just got a Satellite Internet System. Been having this problem ever since. But, got so tired of the slow landline service. Now Internet is much faster but there are other problems. Thanks. Appreciate your help.
