mouse slowdown and lag

Ubuntu 14.04 on ThinkPad T440s in clamshell mode using external monitor:

The mouse periodically (not always) starts lagging dramatically. It's difficult to position it when this happens, as I'll move the mouse and the pointer will react a second or 2 later, and with little precision. Virtually unusable when it gets this way.

Have you tried a different desktop like lxde or xfce4 which are installable using apt-get or software centre?

You will need to log off and on to the new session. Is it better there?
