Blank desktop

Asked by John Koeper

I have been using 12.04 for several years with no issues. Upgraded to 14.04.1. After the install the computer rebooted, got the log-in screen, entered password and logged-in. The display then went to the desktop but the only thing displayed was the version (14.04 LTS) in the lower left corner. None of the the application icons or tool bars were displayed. Also got a message "System program problem detected". I can go the terminal program by using Ctrl-Alt-F1.

Any ideas how to fix?

Thanks

JK

If 12.04 worked ok tgen why upgrade? Precise has 3 years support left. You fixed something that wasn't broken. ....why?

If the guest session works, you might get a quick fix by renaming your .config directory and letting it be recreated. If that gives you a good desktop, you can copy .config subdirectories back one at a time and see which causes the problem. You may find a lot of unrecognized directories, and if things are working for you, just leave them out of the new .config.

Can you help with this problem?
