I have an external modem, not a winmodem. It has been disappointing that I could not set up my dialup connection with Ubuntu or Kubuntu. I was lucky to have an old Mandrake partition, and after wasting a lot of time trying to solve the problem, finding the "option" file in /etc/ppp/ directory of my Mandrake with the following lines in it solved my frustration with Ubuntu:

lock
noauth
noipdefault
usepeerdns

I love Mandrake as it is easy and problem free to use. I don't understand why connecting to the Internet is such a problem in Ubuntu! Even the network icon on top of the screen is such a unfriendly thing comparing with Windows, or Mandrake, or even KDE regarding connection to the Internet. Why is that? The worst is that there is nothing under Internet submenu under Applications. It might be very useful if at least to have "Gnome PPP" there for people who are moving from Windows to Ubuntu.

Ooh forgot to say. The help pages regarding how to make a dialup connection is unbelievably bad. It is assumed you have a winmodem and referring you to an Internet site. How can you get more information if you cann't connect to the Internet!!!!!!!!!
