Installation Display Problem

Asked by leder

Hi,

I have a IBM TP R50e notebook with Windows XP installed and I am trying to install Ubutu 7.10 on it, inside "innotek" VirtualBox (version 1.5.6) machine.

Whilst I can initiate the installation process successfully, after making the language selection (I choose English) and the Timezone, I can not forward the installation since I the selection buttons (I guess they are "OK", "Cancel" or similar) are out side the visible frame I get. This is - I can select the proper location (on the Timezone map), but I can not proceed any further, as I can not reach the buttons (probably located in the lower part of the installation window). I just can not see them, they are just "outside" the screen.

The Ubuntu resolution is 800x600 and the XP resolution is 1024x768.

I have tried selecting different display options, either during the boot process (Pressing F4 and changing the display properties) and/or in the "Screen Resolution" applet.

Any suggestions?

maybe you need reconfigure the xserver-xorg package.

in a root terminal (#) run:

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

a wizard will conduct you to reconfigure xorg.

in resolution step select your preferences.

Hello..

Try reconfiguring your xserver (To adjust the parameters of the video card) using:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Course to get to a terminal you press Control-Alt-F1 (or f2, etc.)

Run the command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

then

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

(or sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart if using kde/kubuntu)

Have a try and keep us informed

Bhavani Shankar.

Hi - Thanks for the advise...it didn't work though :(

Attached is a screen capture of my display during the installation process.
I hope this will explain the situation better.

I had this problem after the install and changed the resolution to 1280X768 . The system drop-down , preference tab has the resolution applet. . This corrected the view except for some of the fonts in the Ubuntu instruction screen were nearly unreadable. In the same preference tab is appearance. I selected high contrast and I have no problem now. (I have a widescreen tv) Hope this helps.

Hi-resolution (like 1280X768) is not available on/with my display.
I have tried altering between the available resolutions but this didn't help.
I still can access some parts of the screen and therefore progress with the installation process.

Workaround question: Is there an option to install the system in Text mode?

Thanks for your question leder.

It's a known problem that the live-cd can't be installed with a resolution less than 1024x768.

There's a "alternate desktop" cd available at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. Just check "Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer." at the end of the page.

Can you help with this problem?
