hello actionparsnip
dual booting with windows7 had no space for updates.
If I do normal update now it will not work after the update...can you suggest a command which might highlight the problem?
thanks
John

When are you told you have low space?

Hello actionparsnip
the reason I have extra space is that I went to settiongs windows 7 and shrunk volume which explains the free space.
My problem is that having then deleted ubuntu partition in windows7 settings and reinstalling 14.04 I selected gnome 3.12??? and when updating the system as per normal I could not get back in so I did it all over again and this time from repository installedegnome 3.10 working successfully until downloading over 300mbs of updates so reinstalling again it works without installing the updates so I hope that you might be able to diagnose the problem ie some internal conflict having already installed 3.12 gnome????

In Trusty you cannot "select" Gnome 3.12. Trusty uses Gnome 3.10 by default. There are 3rd party PPAs you can add to get Gnome 3.12

PPAs do not have the rigerous testing like the official packages in the official reos.

Why do you want to install Gnome 3.12 so very badly?

Then just run updates as normal. Trusty uses Gnome 3.10

The only way to get Gnome 3.12 is to add the Gnome PPA. As long as you don't add the PPA it won't install.

Hello actionparsnip
the downloading of the updates worked this time; the only difference with the last one was that on reinstalling ubuntu 14.04 I selected installing updates with the installation.
Thanks for your help.
