FTP and access to SSL mail accounts very slow

Asked by brett

I have a Dell Latitude e6430 laptop - Win7 64bit as well as Ubunto 14.04. 64bit. With strato.de I have my own web page and also my own pop3 mail account - with Ubuntu 12 everything was working great - both gftp and Evolution were working fast. Around 6 weeks ago our Telekom router was updated to 50mb (nice) and around the same time I updated to 14:04 - since then Evolution takes 30 seconds to fetch mail and gftp takes about the same to open my web site.

if I use Filezilla then it times out - I guess gftp has a longer timeout tolerance. If I use Thunderbird then it also takes the same slow speed. All other web activities are normal - I even have a vpn tunnel to the UK which works fine. I also created a second profile in Evolution to use imap - also very bad.

Outlook on my Win7 system takes 2 seconds to fetch - WS-ftp takes less that a second to open up - I doubt the the new router then...

I have tried logging on as guest and also have used a backup account but there is no difference. I am wondering if my files have a permissions issue.

[Edit] - I have just ran WS-ftp from the Win7 partion in Ubuntu (I guess Wine executes it) and it opened immediately. It is only the Ubuntu programs which are being throttled.

Any ideas?

Did 12.04 work ok for for? You do realise that 12.04 (codena,ed "Precise") is LTS so is supported til april 2017. This gives 3 years more support......why the upgrade?

Hi Andrew,

I guess it is just human reaction - like dozens of others I recieve the update notification and see I am already 2 versions out-of-date and without knowing really what is going on (but trusting) I said yes.

Yes, both mail and ftp were working well with 12 but there was a grey area where I am no longer sure but maybe I noticed slowness and that was also a reason to accept the update.

Sorry I cannot be 100 % sure.

Nautilus can connect to ftp servers. Unlike Windows, the file manager actually has a lot of features so dedicated cliemts aren't needed. Have you tried that?

Hi A,

it does not open with Nautilus - neither with ip or my name ftp.walmsley.de

Neither the hostname ftp.walmsley.de nor the typical mail aliases: mail. smtp. imap. pop. do exist.
Maybe the DNS is misconfigured?

Can you help with this problem?
