Can not boot: fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs VESA VGA

Asked by Marco Wehnert

I have the following PC:

Sedatech - Mini-PC Multimedia, Desktop-PC (AMD E-350 2x1.6Ghz, Radeon HD6310, 4Gb RAM, 160Gb HDD, Full HD 1080p)

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it (to boot from USB i had to set acpi=off).

After installation I restarted the PC and it hangs now during boot, the last error message is

fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs VESA VGA

It would be good if you can provide detailed steps to solve the problem.

That's a common problem with the ATI/AMD driver in combination with the default kernel version.
Your options:
- you can boot Into Recovery mode [1] and do a full update there.
- also you can try to install the package linux-image-generic-lts-trusty in recovery mode[1].
- you can try a more recent installation media for Ubuntu 12.04 [2][3].
- you can use Ubuntu 14.04 instead. [4]
