Query about Codecs for ubuntu 10.04‏

Asked by manish

I am a first time linux (ubuntu 10.04) user and have installed it as dual boot alongwith Xp , but I am quite astonished to note that ubuntu 10.04 does not have basic codecs to play music and video files like mp3 etc, the computer at my home works offline and I have internet at my office only, I several times tried to download the codecs and install them at home but I failed, it is very basic thing that ubuntu 10.04 does not provide, Kindly provide me exact link from where I could download all the basic codecs and install them on my computer offline. Otherwise I shall have to format it .
Please help me and don't disappoint me, Iam eagerly waiting for your response.
Thanking you
manish

Ubuntu 10.04 is not supported any more on the desktop and hasn't been so for a long time. I suggest you remove Lucid and do a clean install of Trusty. Trusty is LTS and supported til April 2019.

Ubuntu is used worldwide and to accommodate the array of international laws does not come with some codecs by default. This is easily remedied by installing the ubuntu-restricted-extras package. These are non-free and proprietary codecs which will play the files that cannot be opened by default. Only open source codecs are included by default.

Shall I have to uninstall ubuntu 10.04 and then install Trusty or should I burn image of trusty and directly install on ubuntu 10.04 and it will be replaced by Trusty.

I'd use Lucid to make the CD and remove the partitions that it is using and do a fresh install of Trusty

Why did you even bother with Lucid? It's like installing Windows 98.

Sorry to bother you again, I am not apt at doing all this (Still Novice), please can you enlist all the steps to remove Lucid through Ubuntu 10.04 Compact Disc, I shall be grateful to you, it is pertinent to mention here that I am using Dual Boot (Window XP and Ubuntu 10.04)

If you boot to the Trusty install CD and run gparted, you can remove all partitions that are not NTFS.
You can then run the installer on the desktop and install to the new freed space.

...also the installer should offer you to replace Ubuntu 10.04 with 14.04.

Yes but you will need to manually remove Lucid. There is a bug with "Remove old version and install new version" where it wipes the entire drive (see OmgUbuntu for details).

I have deleted the and again reinstalled the logical partition even then the Ubuntu 14.04 is not installing and is messaging that an earlier edition of ubuntu is installed, please uninstall the old version and then try installing the new versiion. and even MBR is still shows the dual boot i.e. windows XP and second option Ubuntu
