Playing MP3 in UBUNTU

Can KUBUNTU be configured to play MP3s without installing the package "libxine-extracodecs" ?

libxine-extracodecs is needed for amarok to support mp3.
You can install other players like juk and noatun (both needs libakode2-mpeg for mp3 support).

If you prefer the old-winamp 2.x style, you can try:
'xmms' - mp3 support included.
'beep-media-player' - mp3 support included.
