Another problem with update manager
This one happened with the 12.04 OS I installed in my Mac using Virtual Box. While running Update Manager, I get the following message (while updating LibreOffice):
COULD NOT INITIALIZE THE PACKAGE INFORMATION
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'ain' is not known on line 3 in source list /etc/apt/
As a result of that I ge a red negative sign in the top bar!
How do I solve this? Your help is deeply appreciated. Thanks.

I suspect that your package manager is experiencing the following bug:
https:/
Line 3 is invalid.
Run this Terminal command:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/
Remove the line containing "ain" and save the change to the file.
Then please send the output of the following commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

@Mark:
Thanks for answering fast. Here, the resultso of the two commands. Only problem I saw was at the end of the dist-upgrade command (an error code (1)).

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/
trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/
No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already
dpkg-deb: error: subprocess <decompress> returned error exit status 2
Hope this helps.

There is a problem with the PPA you enabled.
The package http://
contains the file /usr/lib/
There is a conflict between the PPA package and the official Ubuntu package.
I suppose you will need to force the install of libreoffice-base
Try these commands:
cd /var/cache/
sudo dpkg -i --force-all libreoffice-
I also suggest contacting the PPA maintainer about this.

The PPA package does not work. I suggest contacting the PPA maintainer about this.
I am not sure, but I think the PPA maintainer might be Rico Tzschichholz.
You can contact him via this page:
You could also try contacting Björn Michaelsen here:

I also suggest rerunning the following commands to see if the package manager is still giving errors:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
